Sperm DNA fragmentation analysis is a test that helps to assess the percentage of sperm that has damaged DNA. The sperm DNA fragmentation analysis can be done in conjunction with a semen analysis to provide a more complete picture of sperm health and reproductive capability.
Why is it done?
Due to oxidative stress sperm is particularly susceptible to damage, which can cause ‘breaks’ in the DNA strands. Certain individuals have a much higher risk of this damage occurring, especially if they are:
Regular smokers,
Obese,
Of advanced age, or
Regularly exposed to toxic substances
DNA fragmentation has been directly linked with male infertility, therefore a DNA fragmentation analysis can help to identify the cause and allow steps to be taken to improve fertility outcomes.
How do I arrange a semen analysis and sperm DNA fragmentation?
To arrange a semen and sperm DNA fragmentation analysis you can get a referral from your GP or be self-referred. Please contact Concept Fertility at (08) 9382 2388 to book a suitable time. A sample can be collected between 8am and 2pm Monday to Friday.
What is involved?
Semen sample for analysis are produced by masturbation and collected in a sterile specimen jar.
Concept Fertility has special rooms within the clinic that are designed for collection of a sample. If you prefer, you can chose to produce your sample from home. This sample must be delivered to the clinic within the hour. It is essential that you avoid exposing the sperm to extreme temperature and sunlight. For couples that have religious convictions, special condoms which are not toxic to sperm can be purchased at Concept Fertility.
We will also review the information collected from your questionnaire to help interpret the results of your semen analysis.
There are many ways to test DNA damage. At Concept Fertility, the TUNEL assay is used. During this process, sperm that has damaged DNA will appear brown while normal sperm will appear blue (refer to image below, the sperm with arrows are considered to have DNA damage.)
